Description:
B&W’s R&D center is developing what we believe may be the future of boilers within a low carbon world. The marketing name for the technology is BrightLoop. BrightLoop is a chemical looping combustion process that combusts fuels in the presence of iron oxide, as opposed to combustion in the presence of air. Rather than a typical flue gas stream composed of mainly nitrogen, CO2, and water, the output of a chemical looping combustion system is only CO2 and water. This allows for low cost carbon capture coming from a new arrangement of boiler.
B&W has been developing this since 1994 and performed engineering studies for using the technology with a wide range of feedstocks including coal, biomass, natural gas, and others.
The first commercial chemical looping combustion system will go into service in 2026 in Massillon Ohio. Following that, we intend to roll this out far more broadly, including within several projects in Canada.
